Si occupa di Sociosemiotica della cultura e dell’alimentazione. Nella sua attività di ricerca, oltre al problema del rapporto fra cibo ed identità culturale, ha approfondito le questioni legate al discorso politico, all’identità visiva e al brand, all’analisi delle interazioni sui social media e in rete, alle rappresentazioni mediatiche nel cinema e nei cartoni animati.
È autore, tra gli altri, di Cuccioli. Critica dei Cartoni animati (Meltemi 2020), Retoriche social. Nuove politiche della vita quotidiana (Museo Pasqualino 2018), Peppa Pig (2014 Doppiozero). Fra le ultime curatele si segnalano Images of Europe. The Union between Federation and Separation (con Tiziana Migliore, Springer 2021), Culture del tatuaggio (con Gianfranco Marrone, Museo Pasqualino 2018) e Animals in Law (con Alice Giannitrapani, International Journal for the Semiotics of Law, volume 31, 2018).
Francesco Mangiapane is a researcher in Semiotics at the University of Palermo where he teaches Media and Enogastronomy, Semiotics of Gastronomy, Semiotics of Food, and manages the FoodWriting Communication Lab. He has taught at the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo; he held seminars at the University of Burgos (Spain), the University College di Cork (Ireland), Universidad Federal de Goiás and Unesp / São Paulo (Brazil).
He is vice-president of Circolo Semiologico Siciliano and art director of the International Association for Semiotic Studies (IASS). He directs, together with Gianfranco Marrone, the series “Nuovi quaderni del Circolo Semiologico Siciliano” for the publisher Museo Pasqualino.
He has coordinated, together with Francesco Mazzucchelli, the sessions of the permanent seminar of Etnografie del Contemporaneo, entitled “Ereditare” (one and two), dedicated to the Semiotics of Cultural Heritage and of Transmission.
He is regularly collaborating with the cultural magazine Doppiozero and for Gattopardo. He has written for outlets such as Esquire, Film tv, Origami, Elle Decor, Che fare and other newspapers and magazines.
He deals with Sociosemiotics of culture and food. In his research activity, in addition to the problem of the relationship between food and cultural identity, he has deepened the issues related to political discourse, visual identity and brand, the analysis of interactions on social media, as well as of media representations in movies and cartoons.
